MERLIN Mk2 HELICOPTER

This painting was commissioned by Lockheed Martin UK to depict Royal Navy Merlin Mk2 helicopters.

Under the Merlin Capability Sustainment Programme (MCSP) Lockheed Martin and Agusta Westland are upgrading the Royal Navy Merlin Mk1 helicopter fleet to Mk2 configuration. This upgrade will provide greater multi-mission processing capability and improvements to the helicopters radar and sonar which will maintain the Royal Navy at the forefront of maritime helicopter capability.

 The painting brief was for a scene of two helicopters flying over the sea. Both sides of the helicopter had to be visible to clearly show the various upgrades. I suggested a low level scene with the helicopters flying over a rough sea and this became the basis for the painting. The painting is quite large at 40”x30” so a lot of detail could be included on the main aircraft.

 A very enjoyable commission.
